Jul. 9th, 2009 @ 04:06 pm long essay about music that nobody gives a shit about
I sometimes wonder about my state of mind when it come to the music I listen to. I'm pretty much a liberal guy, somewhere in between Barack Obama and Micheal Moore, not exactly a raving anarchist, but boy wouldn't I like to see those fat cats pay 5%-10% more in income taxes; which makes me a damned communist by current right wing standards. I support, mostly, affirmative action, tighter environmental standards, abortion rights, euthanasia, drug decriminalization, anti-nukes, pro-peace, blah blah blah. I'm pragmatic when it comes to getting things done politically, and try to vote for fellow pragmatics instead of idealogs. That's who I am politically: a predictable left-wing wimp.

But I apparently have a hidden nazi inside of me. Not that I've ingested one lately, but within me is a monster who favors warfare, endless battles, slaughter, sadism, satanism, gore, and evil demons running havoc over mankind, inflicting unspeakable blasphemies on your virgin daughters. This is the picture you get of me if you judge me only by my music collection.

One one level, I guess this is fair. Most people I know seem to express themselves and their political views through their music. All the hippies I know listen to hippy music, which expresses the hippy way of life and political outlook. Many Christians I have known listen to contemporary Christian music exclusively, which expresses their world view succinctly with no apparent dissonance with their expressed inner life.

But most of these people were fucking hypocrites who have expressed to me views and opinions much darker than what their public face would say. I've known hippies who were racist and holier than thou Christians who were alcoholic child molesters. The more righteous the public face, the darker the underbelly. I once had a guy, a professed Christian and pot smoker, who I was renting a room from, kick me out of his house after he snuck in my room and took a gander at my cassette collection. Actaully, I made the move first, after living there a week, since he such a fucking creep. But when I told him I was moving, he said "Yeah, well, I was going to kick you out anyway, since I don't let Satan worshipers live here." As I was moving my boxes, He would occasionally check up on me and, "Yup. Worship the devil!" This was a guy who wouldn't let his tenants go in his basement, presumably because he has a meth lab or a grow room down there.

This morning, I listened to the album Battlefields by a band called Hate Forest. Hate Forest is Ukrainian black metal band who exposes National Socialist and Nietzschean views in their interviews. Their music is not obvious propaganda for these views, as the lyrics are never printed and are unintelligible even in Ukrainian. The music is minimalistic, epic and esoteric. It purports to put you in the mindset of a Grand Defender of the Realm, filled with hatred for the invaders who rape and pillage. This is the soundtrack to that hatred, the emotion from which these rigid grooves flow. Imagine if Phillip Glass developed a fetish for Wagner, and took over your brother's shitty metal band and whipped them into shape and made them emigrate to The Ukraine. There are 4 blazing black metal tracks as well as four tracks of authentic Ukrainian folk, sung acapella, to contrasting the divergent moods, strung together only by the intensity of the performance. All in all, an amazing album.

I'm one of the nicest guys I know. I'm polite, if somewhat socially inept. I wouldn't run rampage through peasant shacks, crushing kitten heads with my jackboots, murdering subhumans and all those not up to my manly standards. I am not a nazi. Though their views are mistaken, I can relate on an emotional level. I've always wanted to run rampage. That anger is there. There is a apart of me that wants to control everything, that wants to see life as a grand struggle for survival and conquest, that wants to suck power like vampire in a cheesy horror movie. I think it's in most people, part of that grand dialectic between good evil, Id and Super Ego, ect. I think most people are conditioned to suppress those urges early in life, and express them through the occasional horror movie, swearing, sports, ect.

Good thing that guys like me have heavy metal and Grand Theft Auto to express our inner barbarian. It's a civilizing outlet for those who might otherwise find more passive aggressive outlets for their rage.

I am is honored to be hosting/MCing the Goin' Knowhere Festival, two days of fun pop-punk bands, at the Mix Tape Cafe July 25 and 26. Feature bands will include The Huntingtons, Magnafux, The Vapids, The Prozacs, and the reunion of Sloppy Seconds. Sponsored by Knowhere Records. This is my first hosting gig, guys. The shows will start start at noon and there will be beer available in certain areas. I will provide high energy antics and generalized hysteria for two fun days of snotty, catchy tuneage, featuring my most vulgar poetics and possible nudity in between acts. It's gonna be FUN FUN FUN and almost in the sun, kinda sorta.

I also have a few free tickets left. Show me your boobs for them.

About this Entry
Jul. 7th, 2009 @ 06:40 pm your host for the evening
Low key kind of a weekend. Watched the fireworks in Hopkins with the folks, which was as stereotypically small town as could be, right down to the small community festival featuring elephant ear and cotton candy stands, farm animals, inflatable bouncy thingies for the kids. One thing I've noticed is that small town gatherings seem to have less cleavage and general white trash sluttishness on display than when i was a kid. No tattooed trailer mamas in bikini tops and short shorts. I miss the good old days.

Before rehearsal tonight, I am going to talk to a dude about hosting a pop punk festival near the end of the month at the Mix Tape Cafe. Tons of bands I've never heard of, free beer, and good money on top of that. Seems like a gravy gig.

Slacked off last week on the exercise, swimming only 2 days. Also, the pool was closed for the weekend. Will be making that up this week, of course. Seems to be my usual pattern.

Jul. 4th, 2009 @ 03:22 pm latest metal releases of notable stature and quality
Crowbar-Lifesblood For The Downtrodden-2005-Imagine a really muscular, hairy neanderthal who can't decide whether he's more depressed or angry, then you've got an idea what this band is all about. This would be emo if it weren't for the hefty, testosterone laden riffs. Good stuff.

Convent-Abandon Your Lord-2009-Poland never disappointments on the metal front. Staggeringly heavy Satanic death metal, one of the best finds of this year. The production is a bit murky, but the band overcomes this handicap through the absolute precision of their playing, almost math metal like, but without sacrificing one iota of evil. Wicked Slayer cover, too.

Clutch-Strange Cousins From The West-2009-The new Clutch album is a good collection of stripped down heavy blues tunes that doesn't sound like it was culled entirely from jam sessions.

Cautiva-Human-2009-Another pleasant surprise that's available for free on the guys website. One man thrash metal project that recalls Megadeth and Death at their most proggy. There are some staggering chops displayed in these compositions, and the pre-programmed drums do not distract.

Cattle Decapitation-The Harvest Floor-2009-Gnarly, furious death/grind displaying math metal precision, but rooted firmly in the ooze of the slaughterhouse floor.

Brutal Truth-Evolution Through Revolution-2009-Nice come back for these influential grinders; dissonant grind played at a 1000 miles per hour with maximum ferocity, with a definite math metal influence creeping in.

Blood Tsunami-Grand Feast For Vultures-2009-Another good find, this is wicked death/thrash that brings to mind Kreator, Sadus, and early Pestilence. This could be lumped in with the current wave of retro thrashers if it weren't for the sheer causticness of the sound.

Amorphis-Skyforger-2009-Finnish prog metal perennials come back a bit heavier this time, but full of eccentric flourishes and lush arrangements.

Across Tundras-Lonesome Tails From The Weeping Willows-2008-Expansive pychedelia, heavy on the stoner riffs, with that aura of intangible something that makes it special.

County Medical Examiners-self-titled-2005-part of a split album with General Surgury is notable in it's complete recreation of early Carcass, same tones, same sick sick vibe.

Crimson Glory-Transcendence-1988-Underrated 80's prog metal, similar to to Queensryche and Fates Warning, a surprisingly good collection of tunes, makes me wonder why this didn't catch on with the masses.

Destroyer 666-Defiance-2009-Strong new release from these Australian ghouls. As with most blackened death metal, this become repetitive real quick, but contains enough good riffs and evil kicks to remain interesting throughout.

Frekkr-Voluspa-2008-Well played and melodic pagan metal with gurgley black metal vocals. The French make underground metal almost as good as their cheese.

General Surgery-In Extremis: Analysing Necrocriticism-2009-Another Carcass historical recreation band, which is not necessarily as bad thing, especially as well played and heavy as this album is.

Heaven & Hell-The Devil You Know-2009-Dio front Sabbath's latest slab is another dependable oakchest of heavy riffs and soaring vocals, performed with the righteous countenance of Old Testament prophets.

Horde Of Hell-Blodskam-2009-Perfect set of black metal grooves, not symphonic, not experimental, not low-fi, just evil.

Illness-Necroterror-2009-Primitive Darkthrone worshiping black metal from Poland, which is seemingly never churns out a bad metal band.

Korpiklaani-Karkelo-2009-Finland's best folk metal band churns out another likable vodka swilling chugger with few surprises and only a couple standout songs.

Masachist-Death March Fury-2009-Frantic if brief brutality with off kilter rhythms. Crazy!

Mastodon-Crack The Skye-2009-One of this years best albums. Expansive prog sludge with an ear towards indy rock.

Mistress Of The Dead-I know Her Face From The Tombstone-2009-4 glacial songs in 70 minutes of beautifully depressive funeral doom notable for its multiple layers and attention to detail.

Necroabortion-Brutal Misanthropy-2009-Cannibal Corpse clone with enough impressive chops and riffs to remain interesting.

Ni&urdrepandi-I Dau&da-2009-One of the most impressive and obscure black metal releases this year, full of otherworldly atmosphere and obtuse meanderings.

Pestilence-Resurrection Macabre-2009-Comeback album for these old school deathsters is a return to original form, combining the jazz and prog experimenting with a more traditional sound. A solid, if not earth shattering, release.

Roxxcalibur-NWOBHM For Muthas!-2009-This tribute band does only cover of obscure NWOBHM bands. This album is a hoot, if a bit colorless.

Samael-Above-2009-This Swiss industrial metal band leave the drum machines behind and return to their black metal roots, releasing a sleek, polished album that unfortunately lacks the evil grooves that I loved about their early albums.

Sapattivousi-Ihmisen Merkki-2009-Album of Dio era Black Sabbath covers, with lyrics entirely in Finnish. Weird.

Saxon-Into The Labyrinth-2009-Ancient British metal band, keeping up with the power metal youngster quite well, but not forgetting that they are basicly a glorified pub band.

Sinner's Burn-Mortuary Rendezvous-2009-Nice recreation of the old school Swedish Death metal vibe; lowtuned buzzsaw guitars and primitive riffs.

Snail-Blood-2009-Another nice surprise and one of the best albums released this year. Trippy stoner metal with soaring vocals.

Strandhogg-Ritualistic Plague(Evangelical Death Apotheosis)-2009-Strong Christ-raping fare, no frills, just pure aggression.

Suffocation-Blood Oath-2009-Strong new release from the death metal favorites. With bands like these, it's the little things that count. They haven't changed their sound that much, but you'll notice riff here, a drum fill there, a new kind of gurgle there, if your obsessed about htis music as much as I am.

Super Happy Funtime Burlesque-2009-fantastic, Broadway soundtrack quality live recording of Grand Rapids theatrical juggernauts, featuring various incarnations of the fabulous End Times Orchestra.

Terasbetoni-Myrskyntuoja-2008-Exhilarating traditional heavy metal, sung in Finnish.

Thanatos-Justified Genocide-2009-Propulsive death/thrash fiendishness, enjoyabley spaztic.

Tombs-Winter Hours-2009- heavy black metal doom thing, noisey, with an ear towards the hipsters.

Voivod-Infini-2009-Voivod's latest is a depressive testament to technological decay. An aura of sadness permeates this album, supposedly the last to feature deceased guitarist Piggy's dissonant fret work. An album worth of their legacy.

Wolf-Ravenous-2009-another tribute to Eurometal values, crafted lovingly by Swedish youngsters.

Wolves In The Throne Room-Black Cascade-2009-Another cathartic foray into avant-black soundscapes.

Wretched-The Exodus Of Autonomy-2009-ultra fast, ultra techncal death metal mastery. A most impressive find.

Jul. 3rd, 2009 @ 09:09 pm the last batch of goddamn cassettes good riddance your all going in the closet now
Black Flag-Wasted Again-1987-BF's best of comp. Kind of uneven. They have better songs than what's on this tape.

VA-Deep Six-1986-The comp that announced the Seattle grunge scene to the world, featuring Green River, Soundgarden, Melvins, ect. Not bad.

Beastie Boys-Some Old Bullshit-1994-Collection of early punk singles and proto hip-hop experiments. Not bad, but not essential.

Bad Brains-Self Titled-1982-One of the greatest hardcore albums of all time is a collection of angular, off kilter punk rock with some reggae smattered about for flavor.

The Exploited-Apocalypse '77-1992-Never a great band, this comp is a collection of barely tolerable anthems for soccer hooligans.

Bad Brains-Rise-1993-Where Bad Brains attempt to cash in on their alt rock notoriety by trying to make a Living Color album, with mixed results. Too slick for older fans, and nowhere near as good as the old stuff, but it does recall some of that old fire.

All-Allroy's Revenge-1989-Descendants predecessor band continues the goofiness quotient, but with maturing songwriting chops.

Subhumans-The Day The Country Died-1983-Classic anarcho-punk that leaves me cold. Mildly enjoyable, but just isn't my thing.

WASP-Animal(F**k Like A Beast)-This warning salvo of an ep was WASP's first release. Nasty LA sleaze, thoroughly enjoyable, if brief.

Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force-Odyssey-The Swedish guitar god's bid for commercial glory. Too stale to be enjoy for cheese sakes, thanks to Joe Lynn Turner's vocalizing. I have owned this cassette since 1988.

Suffocation-Breeding The Spawn-1993-Classic monstrosity from these death metal behemoths. The focus is on sick atmosphere and crushing riffs. Some off kilter rhythms here and there, but is mainly a feast of musical disembowelment.

KMFDM-Angst-1993-Classic industrial nonsense, guitar heavy and fun.

Accept-Balls To The Wall-1984-A Teutonic metal classic full of crushing anthems and unintentional homoerotic imagery.

Joe Satriani-Not Off This Earth-1986-Zappa tinged first album from the virtuoso, my favorite of all his albums, due to some of the off kilter arrangements.

Frank Zappa-Guitar-1988-Grammy nominated collection of live improvisations and noodlings. I can listen to Zappa solos all day long

Exciter-Violence & Force-Bargain basement Canadian speed metal with a shitty mix and yelping vocals.

Henry Rollins-The Boxed Life-1993-An engaging collection of spoken word.

Public Enemy-Greatest Misses-1992-Uneven greatest hits album featuring way too many bad remixes.

VA-Judgement Night Soundtrack-1993-Blame this album for the entire rap metal genre. Pretty uneven, the Teenage Fanclub and Del The Funky Homosapien track is unbearable, but when it's good, like the Slayer and Ice-T track, it's sweet.

Corrosion Of Conformity-Blind-1991-COC's first metal album is a Metallica soundalike, but has some good songs.

Prong-Primitive Origins-1987-Prong's first album is a furious and brief collection of thrash metal.

Helios Creed-The Last Laugh-1989-Crazy psychelic punk sludge.

Black Sabbath-Dehumanizer-My favorite Dio fronted Sab slab. Just meat and potatoes doom metal without the party rock pretensions of the previous albums, making these geezers sound like the Old Testament prophets that they are.

Primus-Sailing The Seas Of Cheese-1991-Goofball funk metal classic, containing little real funk.

Frank Zappa-You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 1-1988-Fantastic collection of live Zappa. The entire series is fantastic. Fantastic!

Primus-Frizzle Fry-1990-The Residents for metalheads, with Zappa-esque guitar doodles.

Sick Of It All-Just Look Around-Meat and potatoes New York hardcore, no less and no more.

VA-Doomsday News:Thashing East Live-1990-Live Euro Thrash bash.

Helloween-I Want Out:Live-1989-This entertaining live album is an excellent introduction to this German power metal band, full of happy anthems, soaring vocals, humorous audience interplay, and tremendous chops.

Anthrax-State Of Euphoria-1988-The thrash titans poppiest sounding album isn't exactly as scary or heavy as Reign In Blood or even Among The Living, but is enjoyable on it's own bouncy terms.

Destruction-Sentence Of Death-1984-fantastically cheesey and evil sounding early thrash metal from Germany, sloppy and raw.

Shellac-At Action Park-1994-Steve Albini's trigonometric noise rock masterpiece, precise, obtuse, and killer.

The Beatles-Revolver-1966-Yeah, they're ok.

Sex Pistols-Never Mind the Bollocks...Here's The Sex Pistols-1977-Yeah, they're ok, too.

Cathedral-The Ethereal Mirror-1993-Groovy doom metal that disappoints in the vocal department, but if you can stomach that you will be rewarded by some of the heaviest riffs this side of early Sabbath.

Prong-Whose Fist Is This Anyway-1991-Decent remix ep just before that was the trendy thing to do.

Jul. 2nd, 2009 @ 11:18 pm samples from my neverending collection of cassettes
Motorhead-No Remorse-1984-If you only own one Motorhead album, then it it might as well be this early comp, which collects their singles, b-sides, and obscurities. An amazing collection of gruff classics.

Decay-Starved to death in a land of plenty-199?-Picked this demo up at radio Kilroy back in the day. best anarcho-grind band ever to come out of Kent City, MI. Actually not to shabby for a demo; contains some interesting noodling between thrashings.

Sonic Youth-Confusion Is Sex-1983-My favorite Sonic Youth album is an artfucked collection of No-wave song thingies with bad drumming. Amazing!

Husker Du-Land Speed Record-1982-Husker's first full length is a not entirely tuneless collection of hardcore rave-ups, but far from the pop of the later records. Actually quite an amazing hardcore album in its own right, basic and amphetamine fueled.

Anvil-Pound For Pound-1988-Simply a bad heavy metal album. The riffs and rhythmic attack are competent(if generic), but the songs are junk and the fully understandable lyrics embarrassing.

Godflesh-Pure-1991-One of my favorite albums of all time; a mass of continental drift that is so so beautiful that you want to pluck out your eardrums and eyeballs with salad tongs. Punishing , haunting, dissonant industrial madness.

Morbid Angel-Blessed Are The Sick-1990-This revolutionary death metal release was always a bit of a disappointment to my ears. Not quite as heavy or molten as Covenant, nor as cheesily thrashy as Alter Of Madness, this none the less speeds along nastily, with little experimental bits hear and there, but the guttural vocals over power the guitar work in the mix.

Annihilator-Alice In Hell-Perfectly competent thrash metal that unfortunately cannot overcome the cheese barrier and clumsy songwriting to propel it to the front ranks of the mosh immortals.

Bathory-Hammerheart-1990-This piece of garbage has the distinction of being the first "Viking metal" album, and is thus lauded in the underground. But the formula has been improved upon a 1000 times since, and the shoddy vocals and crappy production values cannot be excused, despite some decent songs and intentions. Highly overrated.

Tom Waits-Anthology of Tom Waits-1985-collection of sentimental favorites from the 70's. A few good songs, but half of this album is too Eagles-like for my tastes.

VA-In-Effect Sampler-Nice little collection of New York Hardcore featuring Prong, Madball, 24-7 Spys, and Agnostic Front.

Cacophony-Speed Metal Symphony-1987-Featuring guitar godz Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, this 80's relic from shredder metal record label Shrapnel is saved from a bad, trebly production and cheesy songs on pure merit of chops alone. Off kilter speed metal riffs and guitar solos galore!

Fudge Tunnel-In A Word-1995-Nice, brutal, varied best of album from the English sludgsters.

Helmet-Betty-1994-Underrated third album from the alt-metal riffsters. Not quite as much a blur of white noise as the last album, this is a somewhat more subtle mixture of melody, bludgeoning rhythms, and experimental excursions.

Carnivore-Retaliation-1987-Though sounding nothing like them, this is basicly Type O Negative's incarnation as thrash metal band in the 80's. Full of politically incorrect Nu Yawk Catholic toughguy rants within a framework melding hardcore and thrash riffs. Decent, but hard to take seriously.

Frank Zappa-Piquantique-1985-awesome Beat The Boots Entry captures Zappa live in 1973 with Jean Luc Ponty, Ian and Ruth Underwood, and George Duke. Fantastic jamming!

Johnny Cash-Unchained-1994-Cash's second album for Rick Rubin is a good alt-country affair with a full band and a medley of original songs and covers.

Motorhead-We Are Motorhead-2000-Straight ahead, no bullshit, completely competent Motorhead album; no surprises save a sneering Sex Pistols cover.

Decendants-Everything Sucks-1996-Surprisingly angry reunion album, considering their past work was always lighthearted and fun.

Husker Du-The Living End-1994-My favorite Husker album is a blinding, deafening sheet of white noise and power pop, captured live in the late 80's. This is not easy listening by any means. Will cause hearing damage at certain volumes.

Pro-Pain-Foul Taste of Freedom-1992-Catchy, riff ready groove metal from before that was even a genre.

Whiplash-Insult To Injury-1990-Underrated thrash classic with a slightly commercial edge. Great songs complimented by bone breaking riffage and much ado to headbang to. Fucking metal!

Germs-Live At The Whiskey-1981-Historical document ROIR tape of an early Germs show, fully of crappy playing and snot galore.

Praxis-Sacrifist-1994-mindbending genrefuck featuring Bill Laswell, Buckethead, Bootsy Collins, John Zorn, Mick Harris, Bernie Worrell, and Yamatsuka Eye. Deep dub, gut churning death, funk, and jazz, often all within the same song.

Soundgarden-Superunknown-1994-Blockbuster grunge album, more psychedelic and Beatlesque than previous efforts.

Husker Du-Everything Falls Apart and More-1993-Ryko Disk rerelease featuring landmark first studio album along with some singles and Eps.

Sonic Youth-Made In USA-1995-This soundtrack to an unreleased indy film is a perfect collection of ambiant guitar soundscapes.

VA-Twisted Willy-1996-One of the alltime great tribute albums this is a collection of Willy Nelson songs covered by X, Supersuckers, Wayland Jennings, Re. Horton Heat and other outstanding alt rock luminaries.

NoMeansNo-Sex Mad/You Kill me-Angular and nihilistic prog punk.

Forbidden-Raw Evil-1989-live thrash metal ep. capturing the essence of this nearly forgotten band of yore. Mosh worthy.

Butt Trumpet-Primitive Enema-1994-This was a gutter punk novelty band that got signed to Chrysalis during the Great Major Label Feeding Frenzy of the Early 90's. Formerly a denizen of Maximum Rock N Roll and the second tier of LA Punk, this record benefits from quality recording, but is ultimately geared towards the Beavis and Butthead crowd. Deliberately offensive without any trace wit or irony.

Death Angel-Frolic Through The Park-1988-Likable second effort from these Bay area thrashers. Not quite as ferocious as the first knuckle dragger, this contains many surprises, some unfortunate and dated lapses into pseudo funk, but thrashes along quite nicely, if a bit lightly.

Iggy Pop-Lust For Life-1977-Seminal solo record from the Iggster, mostly composed by David Bowie. Garage rock with a sophisticated sheen.

Nuclear Assault-Live At The Hammersmith Odeon-1992-Unnecessary live recording released as a contractual obligation during the end of the thrash metal era.

Nuclear Assault-Handle With Care-1989-The Nu Yawk thrasher's best album, melding furious hardcore with memorable metal riffs and songs. Benefits from a powerful, clear production.

Grinder-Nothing Is Sacred-1991-Average, uninteresting, by the numbers German thrash featuring above average musicianship.

Crass-Best Before-1984-Shrill anarcho-punk never sounded so swell! Fantastic collection of early Crass singles, featuring obscure sound collages, poems, screeds, and some rockin' tunes.

The Reverand Horton Heat-Liquor In The Front-1994-Fun psychobilly produced by Al Jourgenson of Ministry fame, featuring requisite but unnecessary industro-metal rave-ups.

Misfits-Earth AD-1983-Classic Misfits last album, also their "hardcore album", is a ferocious beast, but contains just enough of the previous tunefulness to remain true to the original concept of 50's inflected trash punk. A classic.

Sodom-Obsessed By Cruelty-1986-Brilliant and also completely retarded German thrash from the Golden era of Retarded German Thrash. Not being quite proficient at their instruments did not stop these Teutonic wonders from evoking an atmosphere of pure cheesy evil. A happy accident of ineptitude. The Tombs of The Blind Dead of metal albums.

Intense Degree-Peel Sessions-Wonderful British hardcore, bordering on grindcore at times.

Slayer-Hell Awaits-1985-This most hollowed of Slayer album is actually my least favorite of the early ones. It's mainly a collection of riffs and half baked ideas that coalesce into songs once in a while, though at the most ferocious pace imaginable. Yes, it's still a classic, just not quite in league with South of Heaven or Show No Mercy.

Megadeth-Cryptic Writings-1997-The most underrated of mid period Megadeth. It's clear that Mustain's heart in in the writing of rock songs, as thrashers like She-wolf and Vortex sound hackneyed and generic, and song's like Almost Honest and Secret Place displaying a complexity that weirdly merges into Bob Mould territory.

Born Against-The Rebel Sound Of Shit And Failure-1995-Nice singles compilation of grinding and furious hardcore punk that delves into sludge, noise and earnest creativity.

Buddy Guy-Damn Right I've Got The Blues-Fantastic blues album, a grammy winner, too. Gut bucket blues guitar that borders on free jazz and shredding as it wanders from intensity to intensity and the shades of sadness therein.

Stevie Ray Vaughan-The Sky Is Crying-Posthumous Stevie ray album that is virtual guitar porn for blues aficionados. Many fine licks from the blues master.

Black Flag-Loose Nut-1985-Somewhat uneven album that was once lauded as Flag's return to traditional punk, but in reality is a roaring noise punk affair.

Beastie Boys-Ill Communication-1994-Electic and funky mid 90's hiphop.

Broken Hope-Swamped In Gore-1991 Sluggish death metal also rans from the heyday of American Death Metal.

Ice Cube-Death Certificate-1991-Funky, unforgiving gangster rap from when that genre was truly dangerous. As aggressive as any metal band from the day.

Savatage-Hall Of the Mountain King-1987-Grand, theatrical 80's power metal, slightly dated by janky production values and shrill vocal yelps, but a mountain of riffs and anthems none the less. members of this band went on to found Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Ice-T-Freedom of Speech-1988-80's gangster rap that foreshadowed an entire era; a crime novel on record, embellished with T's political conscious and Evil E's aggressive mix.

Today Is The Day-Supernova-1993-Unclassifiable avant-metal masquerading as an Amphetamine Reptile noise rock band. Much too heavy and disturbing for the unpsychotic, it almost explodes from the meager production values to infiltrate your subconscious, making you mutilate many innocent bystanders with your evil glare alone as you sit on the bus transfixed by the nihilist grooves in a PCP induced haze.

Hellecasters-Escape From Hollywood-1994-Country fried shredder album for chicken pickin' aficionados by a collection of top Nashville session men. For guitar lovers only.

VA-Soundbites From The Counterculture-1990-collection of spoken word featuring Henry Rollins, Hunter S. Thompson, and Abbie Hoffman.

William S. Burroughs-Dead City Radio-1990-breathtaking spoken word from the original beat, accompnied by Sonic Youth, John Cale, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.

Andrew Dice Clay-The Day The Laughter Died-The Dice man performance art album. True to it's title, there is little actual comedy on this album, just a series of improvised misanthropic rants and audience interactions, by turns vile, offensive, psychotic and hilarious. The Diceman was a worked character who eventually swallowed his maker, and this double cassette is a testament to that devolution. This fucker sold out stadiums back in the day. Weird.

Helped my dad build a dock for his pontoon. It was hard work, but surprisingly stress free, dispite the mosquitos. The channel were the slip is located has a bunch of dilapidated, half drowned docks, so our engineering feat will surely be the best dock in all of Hillbilly Heaven. The secret is to Wolmanize the motherfucker, you cheap "Say ya hate Nigras when your ass is more ghetto Ike Turner with a Jeri Kurl" white trash bastards with your janky ass docks and flag colored bass boats! Wolmanize is a macho technical term for treated wood. Also, we used 2 by 6 planks, instead of 1 by 6 planks, because that's what it takes to keep our heft from falling into the channel.

Then, we took the pontoon out for the first time. The motor needs a tune-up. It putted halfway down the creek before stalling out. We didn't even make it to Thornapple Lake. Dad managed to get the thing started again, though. We putted back to the dock, tied everything down, and went home.

Later that evening, postering for the Burlesque Show!!!! That's a semi-full day.

4 YEARS!!!! Hard to believe it but SHFTB has been having wacky adventures in GR for nearly half a decade now. Police raids, idle threats, lambasted by 'Gonzo' on his stellar 'webblog', kicked out of the Meijer Gardens, and performed on stages all over the state of Michigan every month; GRAND RAPIDS' FINEST WORK OF UNDERGROUND MUSICAL THEATRE RETURNS HOME ON JULY 11 TO CELEBRATE ITS 4TH ANNIVERSARY!!!!

Only fitting then that this event at SHFTB's home base, The Wealthy Theatre, is its first theatrical event WITH ALCOHOL SERVED!! Thats right, folks, Wealthy Theatre got its liquor license. Only thing is its a club license so you gotta be a theatre member if you want to drink. We're sweetening the deal by offering this little incentive: THEATRE MEMBERS GET IN FOR FREE!!! Thats right, Junior, if you are a CMC member you don't gotta buy a ticket and thats 10 more dollars closer to waking up in the gutter. Theatre membership is only 25 bucks a year, thats the price of two tickets and a jack and coke- SO GET YERSELF A MEMBERSHIP, CHUBBY!!!

Join Mr Happypants, LaLa Vulvaria, Velveeta the Cheeta, Vivacious Miss Audacious, Sarah Jean Adventuretime, Duchess Von Doom, Original Cin, Camilla Cupcake, Philly Goodtimes, Regular Guy Josh Fremer, Joe the Cabdriver, AND THE UNBELIEVABLE END TIMES ORCHESTRA on July 11th at 8pm for a celebration that is sure to leave jaws on the floor!!

Jun. 25th, 2009 @ 01:43 pm pissing out the poison
Yesterday was an angry sort of day. My air conditioner busted, and my folks with their arthritis were exceptionally bitchy, and the heat just made this little trailer like that Spike Lee movie Do The Right Thing. My dad informed me he's not paying for gas to my burlesque related activities, saying that it's money that could be spend on him going to the Lake and why should he pay for my entertainment? I just love how he subtly degrades the things that are most important to me. It's just entertainment. It's just a hobby. Asshole. Then he started getting on my case about finding a job, to which I replied hello do you read the fucking paper there are no jobs dad. Well, you could go out and look. And hey Joe, Have you ever tried that soul crushing factory? I just know you want to work in a soul crushing factory 50 hours a week, to which I weakly replied, "Well, you have to go through ManPower, dad" instead of saying, "Hey fuckface, I am never again going to devote the majority of my time and energy to some shit barrel job I don't care no matter how good the benefits are I will not end up some fat, comfortable, miserable, beaten down and bitter old man like yourself there sir. No, in the end, I may become miserable and beaten down with legs amputated and blind due to diabetes and multiple sclerosis or whatever, but I will not become bitter because at least I will have pursued my dreams and ambitions, and I will have some of my integrity intact when the nurse comes to wipe my ass!" Nope, I did not say that shit.

I must wait. I must be patient. Things will change. I cannot change my dad. That's the one thing that the therapists used to tell me time and time again. I cannot change my dad, my domineering father. Mom and old age have whipped him into more of a passive aggressive beast these days, but his fundamental nature has not changed, and I cannot change that. He will never be my emotional bedrock. Borderline personalities cannot be, no matter how much medication you give them. He will always be manipulative, distrusting, and suspicious at heart. He will never fully accept me for who I am, never fully accept me for not being the kind of person he always wanted to mold me into. You are the flesh of my flesh, Joe, he used to say when I was younger. After he realized that he couldn't change me, I became the reincarnation of his abusive father. He would see those traits in my and point them out. He can never quite accept me on my own terms. I am only the result of what came before, of what springs from him. There is always a condition to acceptance. Mom has always accepted me unconditionally. That's why we get along. With dad, I must be only what he wants to see and hear, or else there is drama. That's why we hardly ever speak beyond small talk and joking. Most car rides with him are in silence.

I feel better already.
